1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Loyola College of Education is a Catholic, private (Minority) institution situated at Namchi, the South district of Sikkim in a sprawling and picturesque ten acres of land at the foothills of the Himalayas. It was started in response to the request of the Government of Sikkim and is named after St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus.

The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius of Loyola and its members are popularly known as the Jesuits. It is an international Catholic Religious Order with its members engaged in activities such as Education, Social Action, Legal Aid, Communication, Pastoral Works, Adult and Rural Literacy Programmes, Environmental studies etc. In India, in the field of education, Jesuits are currently managing and are engaged in over 130 High Schools, 25 Degree Colleges and Teacher Training institutes and 10 Technical Institutes. Besides these, the Jesuits have five Social Institutes, five Labour and Management Institutes, six Centers of Scientific Research in disciplines like Botany and History, and five Centers for Inter-Religious & Cultural Dialogue.
 

2. THE BEGINNING
The concept of an educational institution like Loyola College of Education in Sikkim was originally conceived by Fr. Cherian Padiyara, S.J., the then Regional Superior of the Darjeeling Jesuits. This vision was subsequently concretized and professionally & aesthetically designed by Mr Kiran Rasaily. Its foundation stone was blessed by Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., the Superior General of the Society of Jesus on March 03, 1993. The construction of the College building was supervised & got ready for use by June 1994 by Fr. Giles Goluckmu, S.J.. And the first batch of trainees was admitted in July 1994.
 

3. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of Loyola College of Education is to impart an all round formation to the would-be educators- spiritual, moral, emotional, mental, social and intellectual as only such men and women, the Jesuits believe, could be trusted with the task of educating the youth of the country. This aim, again, the Jesuits believe, could be attained through the following objectives:
i. To prepare conscientious, committed, competent, and compassionate citizens of the country.
ii. To ensure an all round development of her students and thereby prepare men and women for others who are intellectually alert, religiously mutually accepting and respecting, socially adjusted, physically healthy, psychologically balanced, and politically conscious of their rights and duties.
iii. To impart quality education in the field of Secondary Teacher’s training.
iv. To develop personal and critical thinking in the minds of her students.
v. To educate together with their minds the hearts of her students.
vi. To impart value based training to her students.
 

4. MANAGEMENT
Loyola College of Education, Namchi is managed by the Darjeeling Jesuits of North Bengal. It has a Governing Body with the Provincial of Darjeeling Jesuit Province as its President. To support it in the day-to-day running of the Institution there is a Managing Committee of the College with representatives of the Government of Sikkim, the University of North Bengal, the Teaching Staff of the college and that of the well known educationists of South Sikkim.
   

5. FINANCE & FEES
Let it be known, that Loyola College of Education, Namchi is an Un-Aided Institution. Hence, all its financial needs are met entirely by the fees collected from the students and which is revised periodically according to the needs of the institution. Fees are charged as per the Fee Structure approved by the Managing Committee. A copy of the same shall be sent to each of the selected candidates. Both, the Academic and the Hostel Fees are payable in three installments. The First Installment is collected at the time of admission while the second and the third installments are payable at different times during the academic year. The respective due dates would be indicated in the Academic Calendar of the College, a copy of which would be provided to each student.
 

6. DURATION OF THE COURSE
As of now, the B.Ed. course is of ONE year duration. The course is divided into two Semesters, July - December and February - June. The Academic year begins on July 10.
 

7. AFFILIATION
Loyola College of Education, Namchi, is affiliated to the Sikkim University (Central) and it enjoys the permanent recognition by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the statutory body for training teachers for Secondary Education.
 

8. ON CAMPUS FACILITIES
Within its campus, Loyola College of Education, Namchi provides two luxurious hostels, one for men and the other for women. Each of these hostels has an intake capacity of fifty, (shared rooms), making up the total of a hundred in the hostels. Apart from these two hostels, there is also a Jesuit staff residence. As the institution aims at the all round development of her students, apart from providing excellent academic facilities, she also provides games’, both, indoor and out door, facilities; there is an excellent basketball court of international standard, two volleyball courts, and three outdoor badminton courts. Keeping in mind the weather situation, she also provides other indoor games facilities.
 

9. ADMISSION
The admission to Loyola College of Education, Namchi, is open to all irrespective of their caste, creed or class, sex and place of birth. However, everything being equal, a preferential option is given to the candidates from Sikkim and also those from the under-privileged group whom Christ loved and served most.
 

10. ELIGIBILITY
Only those candidates would be eligible for admission who have secured a minimum of 50% in the aggregate in their Graduation/Post Graduation examinations from any recognized university. (Relaxation would be granted to SC/ST candidates who produce the relevant certificates). Working knowledge of English is essential. Those awaiting results of their Graduation/Post Graduation Examinations need not apply.
 

11. AGE LIMIT
The Affiliating University, i.e. the Sikkim University, does not specify any age limit for admission to B. Ed. course. Therefore, there is no Age-Limit.
 

12. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION
The medium of instruction in the college is English. All Curriculum transactions, such as Internship Teaching, Term Papers, Seminars, Mid term as well as Final Semester Examinations will be in English.

13. CHOICE OF METHOD PAPER
The College offers the following school subjects as the method papers: English, History, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Nepali. As per the present syllabus, a teacher trainee will have to choose ANY TWO of the above. If there is a grouping system, then a trainee will have to choose two different subjects from different groups. However, if the number of students choosing a particular subject is less than five, then that particular Method Paper may not be offered by the college; students will have to opt for some other subject. In a method paper the total number of seats available are 25. What is very important while making a choice of the method paper is that the students must have studied that particular subject at his/her Graduation Course.
 

14. CO CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The College provides every opportunity to her students for their training in planning and organizing co curricular activities. A rich and wide variety of activities like Quiz, Singing, Debate, Art, Gardening, Games and Sports competitions etc. are organized during the academic year. To foster Cooperative learning Guided Small Group Discussions are incorporated among the other scholastic activities. Further, so that the students do not lose sight of their rich Religious and Cultural heritages amidst the wave of modernity, all major religious and cultural feasts are celebrated with great enthusiasm.
 

15. CLASSES
The college starts at 9.00 A.M. and ends at 4.00 P. M. . Lunch break is from 12.30 - 1.30. P.M.
 

16. ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is compulsory. Prior written applications for leave is mandatory. Disciplinary actions would be taken against students who absent themselves from classes without their written leave applications to and their subsequent approval of the Principal. Should the students absent themselves from a particular class only, they need to inform the respective subject teacher. It is compulsory to be present both on the last day before and on the first day after all major holidays, like Puja, Diwali, and Winter Vacations.
 

17. CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
Continuous mentoring of her students during the academic year is the outstanding feature of Loyola College of Education. Therefore, provision is there for each student to have his/her own mentor from among the Staff. Furthermore, periodically the college conducts internal written tests. These help the administration in assessing & monitoring the continuous progress of the students.
